Home Solutions with Wire Shelving
Wire shelving is a versatile, cost-effective, and attractive method for storage in many areas of the home. Whether it’s in the bathroom, bedroom, and basement or in the garage, attractive, sturdy shelves can be customized to fit your needs. Closets often have unused space that can be utilized for more storage with the addition of shelves. You can choose to wall-mount shelves either individually or in a grouping to create eye-catching displays, or you may purchase a free-standing rack unit. Using wire shelving throughout your home will expand your storage capabilities and help keep you organized.
Using Wire Shelving for Storage
Racking and shelving can be added to many spaces that are otherwise wasted. Garage storage systems can be personalized to meet both your needs and the constraints of the space. If your garage has a higher ceiling, consider hanging racks. Perfect for camping equipment, seasonal decorations, out-of-season clothing bins, or sporting equipment, overhead storage can be anchored to the load-bearing joists of your home. Proper anchoring makes them safe for holding heavy items with ease.
Also in the garage, shelving units are perfect for organizing tools, spare parts, and other home-care supplies. If space is at a premium, consider purchasing units with wheels. You can then push them against a wall two deep, allowing you to wheel the first one out of the way to access the shelves behind it. This is also helpful when it comes time to seal the garage floor or move the shelving to suit your needs. Be sure any rolling unit you purchase comes with wheel locks, for the sake of safety.
Closets are another area of underutilized space in most homes. Depending on your storage needs, you can add more shelves for extra bedding, towels or outerwear. Hangers can also be hung beneath, from the wire, to increase the capacity of your closets. In many closets, a rod is hung at eye level with nothing beneath. If your clothes don’t hang to the floor, why not install a few shelves for shoes and take advantage of the wasted space?
A portion of the basement, either finished or unfinished, is also a perfect location for more storage shelving. If you decide to anchor them to the walls in a finished basement, be very careful to avoid structures behind the wall, such as pipes or electrical wiring. If the basement becomes damp, consider shelves with a rubber or powder-coat finish to resist rust.
Decorating and Organizing with Wire Shelving
Shelving made with wire has the distinct advantage of being versatile. As they are manufactured in a wide selection of sizes, you can use them in virtually any room in your home. In the bathroom, consider installing shallow wall units to hold all your lotions, potions, and grooming accessories. Place small hooks on the wires to hang a hand mirror, curling iron, or blow dryer. As bathrooms are also frequently humid, make sure the wires are rust-resistant.
For the bedroom, properly-anchored wall shelves or a stand-alone unit can be spray-painted to match the decor. You can use the space to display photographs, mementos, artwork, and other meaningful possessions. You can also use Christmas-ornament hooks to hang baubles, sun-catchers, or sachets along the edge of the shelves.
In children’s bedrooms, a large unit anchored to the wall is perfect for storing games, books, puzzles, and stuffed animals. Be sure to instruct the child never to climb the shelves. For a little girl, ribbons or lace can be woven through the edges of the shelves. For boys, hooks can be used to display action figures, trading cards, or sports pennants. Older kids may way strings of cool LED lights on their shelves, or miniature disco balls. For all children, this is a surefire way to help keep their belonging neat and tidy.
Have too many books in the study or den? Due to how heavy books can be, wall-mounted shelves can be precarious. Only install them if you are confident you can find the wall studs reliably. Wall-mounted units should also be loaded evenly. Free-standing shelving units are a foolproof method for organizing a library and keeping all your titles accessible. This is especially useful for larger collections or odd-sized books that may not fit in standard wooden shelves.
Both wall-mounted and free-standing shelves are the perfect solution for all of your storage and decorating needs. Used properly, rolling units can add versatility. Every room in the house can benefit from being more organized, and wire shelves are an easy, cost-effective way to keep your belongings neat and tidy.
